After publishing the last post on 2020 TOP travel destinations, some readers challenged me to share more hidden gems within South Africa. So I’ve listed 10 South African treasures for you that are ‘MUST-visits’ in 2020!
1. Maloti-Drakensberg Park
If you’re keen to enjoy natural beauty – from rock pools to caves – this UNESCO World Heritage Site is for you. Bordering the Kingdom of Lesotho and the Drakensberg, South Africa, this park is a stunner and a perfect road-trip destination.
2. Hammanskraal
Do have a look at my blog post entitled ‘Glamping Season’. The pictures speak for themselves. We had an amazing time!!!
3. Clarens
Mountains. Art. History. Golf. Enough said!
Autumn and Spring are the best times to visit. If you can, I’d advise coinciding your stay in Clarens with one of their big events, such the lifestyle cook-off, the country market, the surrender hill marathon as well as the Clarens Craft Beer Festival.
4. Kalahari Red Dune Route
Picture red sand dunes; dry riverbeds; wide open skies and flat-topped acacia trees! Located in the North West, this destination also provides an opportunity to interact with native bushmen – the San.
5. Hole in the wall, Coffee Bay
The Eastern’s Cape Wild Coast has always been a winner for me. The epitome of untouched beauty!
6. Haga Haga
Also located in the Eastern Cape, Haga Haga is known for her tranquil sandy beaches. Perfect for couples and family getaways!
You also have the opportunity to interact with locals at Thandi’s Khaya: enjoy the Xhosa culture and delicious food!
7. Cango Caves in the Karoo
This spot is a great idea as long as you’re not claustrophobic!

8. Oribi Gorge, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN)
Just do yourself a favour and visit here!
9. Lisbon falls in Graskop, Mpumalanga
Located in the Panorama route which includes Bourke’s Luck Potholes, the Blyde River Canyon, God’s Window, and the Three Rondawels, this is the perfect location for a memorable getaway.
10. Magoebaskloof, Tzaneen
The Limpopo province has way more to offer besides her delicious avocados, mangoes and bananas 🙂
Try the Canopy Tour and indulge in the best blueberry cheesecake you’ll find at Blueberry Heights Mountain Cafe!
If you have time, do stop by Debengeni Falls for a scenic picnic when you’re there!

Hammanskraal, I would have never thought! It’s funny and quite cringey how we are not aware or even appreciate those little gems nearest to us.
Definitely checking out some of these spots this year.
Thank you Siba.
