13 Ways to Snap Out of That ‘End of Year’ Slump

Can you believe it’s November already? I’m certain you would agree when I say most of us are exhausted – emotionally, mentally and physically. As the countdown to the festive season nears, office productivity is dwindling; people are more relaxed with their routines – actually some of us are just over it!
The year has carried highs and lows for each of us: losing loved ones, ending certain relationships, dealing with hurt and disappointment; on the other hand promotions, marriages, newborn babies, etc.

How much of these outcomes from this year align with all the high hopes and goals you had at the beginning of 2019 (comment below)?


In an effort to finish the year strong, I’ve compiled a list of practical points I think will help you soldier through the final stretch.

  1. Mind the power of words: Regardless of what is happening around you, you control your inner environment. How you choose to respond to external events and situations matters. So speak positively.
  2. Tap into other people’s energy: We all have that friend or acquaintance who is always positive and motivated. Arrange a catch up session with them and let all that positive energy rub off on you!
  3. Ditch the clutter: Clean up your workspace; do a closet clean up; clean out your garage… The process of letting go clears your space and your mind.
  4. Do something good: this time of year is a great time to give. Donating to the less fortunate also reminds us how blessed we are in spite of the challenges we face.
  5. Prioritise: Look at your project list, and pick the tasks you can reasonably execute on before the end of the year.
  6. Identify the next opportunity: Remember there’s always next season. This will give you hope that there’s another chance to complete what you wanted to achieve in 2019. At the end of the day, it’s about progress not perfection.


7. Do one thing to prepare for 2020: Reflect on significant past experiences and see what you can do to equip yourself for 2019. This is a growth mindset.

8. Talk to someone: Connect with your therapist, coach, or your accountability group, and share your year-in-review. This will help you look forward to the future, no matter how ‘badly’ you think 2019 has gone for you.

9. Remain grateful. Gratefulness isn’t hard and it makes us open to receiving more good things. Host a thanksgiving potluck (bring and share) sometime this month, reminding one another of all the blessings received over the year.

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. I Thessalonians 5:18 

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4: 6 

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever. Psalm 136: 1 

10. Keep rewards in sight: Whether it’s that beach holiday destination, an upcoming festival, or Netflix and chilling vibes. Whatever it is for you, keep your eye on the prize.


11. To beat that fatigue, get enough sleep, eat a healthy diet and exercise.

If I’m being honest, 2019 has been very difficult for me; this is why I’ve published this post to help me get through last quarter as well. In spite of the very strong temptation to write this year off as a complete disaster, I encourage you to hold on even tighter to positivity and gratefulness.

  1. This is very insightful, I’m not so sure about a cold shower though lol 🙈.
    My tip is to keep a journal, I’ve found it always help keep my thoughts on track. It’s always great reading back months later, especially after achieving goals that seemed far fetched months ago.
