Birthdays Should Be Celebrated!

Lately I’ve been reflecting on the reality that life is not easy – disappointment, loss and failure are inevitable! We can easily lose our joy and be miserable when negative things happen to us.

Birthdays are the perfect chance still to believe the best in spite of our circumstances. Such positivity is bound to bring us peace and happiness!
Whatever your belief system or world view, commemorating the day you entered this world is important because YOU MATTER!

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12

Reasons Why You Should Celebrate Your Birthday

Your birthday is a reminder that you have another chance to fulfil your unique purpose.

Your birthday is an opportunity to take stock of your life, your faith and your people.

Most importantly, your birthday is an opportunity to count your blessings.

Granted, there are some people who do not know the exact date they were born. If that’s you, you can still choose a day that is significant to you and make it your special day of reflection…

Your birthday is a transition from one season to the next. Your very own New Year!

Simple Ideas to Celebrate Your Birthday

Give thanks. An attitude of gratefulness always attracts more good things your way.

If you can, take the day off work: kick off your morning with prayer/meditation; take a nice long bath; eat a yummy breakfast; and spend the rest of the day away from work calls, e-mails or anything else that tends to be a stress trigger!

Do something you love. For me that’s writing – hence this blog post on my birthday! #selah

Host an indoor picnic. This keeps things simple and intimate. It’s also perfect if your birthday falls during the winter season.

Host a private movie screening. Whether you watch something on Netflix or Showmax, camp at someone’s home with some popcorn, and you get to choose the film! #chill

Get a room at a karaoke bar. This way you can sing/scream to your heart’s content, without having to embarrass yourself too much!

Buy yourself a gift. #selflove

Host a braai (barbecue). You can’t go wrong with smoked meat, some corn on the cob, tasty side salads and a good crowd! #nevergetsold

Host a pyjama (slumber) party. One of my besties did this for her birthday this year. She cooked an amazing dinner, and we spent the evening dancing to our favorite songs and laughing the night. This is probably one of my most memorable Friday evenings of 2019. #goodvibesonly

Make a list of all the things you accomplished over the past year: (If you need help jogging your memory, look through your Google calendar, Facebook and Instagram!)

For by me your days will be multiplied, and years will be added to your life. Proverbs 9:11

Do SOMETHING NICE FOR YOUR BODY. A massage? A manicure? A new hairstyle (haircut)? A long bike ride or a nice swim? Do what makes you feel good!

Visit some natural space (like a botanical garden, the beach or a park). #greentherapy

Do something you have never done before. This is your chance to discover something new, whether it’s skydiving or a cooking class, or even just having dinner at some place you’ve wanted to try.

Volunteer for a cause you’re passionate about. #giveback

Lastly, maybe host a pot luck/bring and share. Shared food just tastes better! This birthday celebration idea is kind to the budget!

For to everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance… Ecclesiastes 3:1-4

Fact: Life is full of ups and downs, but your latter days shall be better than the former.
Truth: Every life (birth) is precious and valuable.

Celebrate milestones. Celebrate birthdays.

  1. Ha! If I didn’t know any better I would say these birthday posts are following me in a creepy way. I love celebrating my friends birthdays. If you are big on your birthday, best believe I will go all out with you.

As for me…I couldn’t give two rivers about my birthday. There are years where I even forget. I sometimes think its to do with the million and one disappointments and hurts I can’t laced with that day. The crux of it though is that I have never been one for birthdays. I have tried a couple of times but…

I am a believer in celebrating moments, right now, not all of them.

    1. Ah I love this comment 🙂 Yeah, some people are just not for their birthdays… As long as you celebrate milestones (e.g. the marathons you finish – such an inspiration) or just even take time out to reflect on the beauty that is your existence, then that’s great. Thanks for reading and commenting!
